Best Places to Eat in Colwyn Bay & Porth Eirias

23 May 2024

Colwyn Bay is a foodies paradise with a wealth of fantastic eateries and takeaways ensuring that there is something to appeal to all tastes, ages and dietary requirements.

With award winning bistros owned by one of the best Welsh chefs, traditional fish & chips takeaways, cute pet friendly cafes and rustic pub food, Colwyn Bay truly does provide you with a plethora of options.

So, without further ado, let's get to our top choices…

1. Bryn Williams at Porth Eirias

Hailing from nearby Denbigh, Bryn Williams has won a reputation for excellence having earned his stripes in some of Europe’s most exclusive restaurants. Having worked alongside the likes of Marco Pierre White, Williams combined his expanding knowledge of cooking with his experiences of fishing and farming gleaned from his childhood in North Wales.

Having attained three AA rosettes whilst running his first restaurant in London, Bryn returned to North Wales to set up the Bryn Williams restaurant which is now open to the public in Porth Eirias. Guests can enjoy stunning coastal views as they enjoy mouthwatering cuisine prepared using excellent quality local produce.

Serving breakfast, lunch and dinner, Bryn Williams restaurant is without question the best place to head if you are looking for a special treat whilst in Colwyn Bay.

2. Pen Y Bryn Pub & Restaurant

Owned and operated by Brunning & Price who have a reputation for creating rustic pubs which offer exceptional cuisine alongside real ales, the Pen Y Bryn in Colwyn Bay very much sticks to their successful formula.

Situated slighter higher up than the Bryn Williams Restaurant in a residential area of Colwyn Bay, the Pen Y Bryn pub still offers exceptional coastal views which are best enjoyed from its beer garden. This is an idyllic place to sit during the summer months with their selection of real ales and fine wines making it a great place to chill out.

There is no question that the Pen Y Bryn serves the best pub food in Colwyn Bay with an excellent selection of international and traditional British classics ranging from pies and burgers, to pastas and Asian inspired stir fry. You can even opt for an option off the light bites menu which consists of mouth watering snacks such as fish finger sandwiches and quiches.

3. Jaap’s Catch

It wouldn’t be a traditional British seaside town if it didn’t have the odd fish & chips restaurant and Jaap’s Catch is arguably the best of these.

Located near the town centre, Jaap’s Catch offers eat-in and takeaway options, so you can always bring your food back with you to Bryn Defaid Holiday Park. However, if you do decide to dine in the restaurant you will have the option to end the meal with a tasty sweet off their desert menu.

All varieties of fish are cooked using their secret recipe beer batter which really helps to set them apart from other fish & chip shops in the local area. Alongside the traditional fish and chips, Jaap’s Catch also serves other traditional chippy options such as sausages, pies & fish cakes.

4. Bodnant Welsh Food Centre

Located on the outskirts of Colwyn Bay towards Tal-y-Cafn is the exquisite Bodnant Welsh Food Centre; a family owned facility which aims to celebrate the very best of Welsh produce.

There are plenty of dining options to choose from inside the centre, with hearty breakfasts, sandwiches and cakes served in the Courtyard Cafe and more extensive meals served in the sophisticated Hayloft Bar & Grill. All meals here are prepared using locally sourced meats and produce to create a mix of British and international dishes which are simply out of this world. The Sunday lunch options featuring succulent Welsh lamb is particularly worthy of a mention.

If you are inspired by the food on offer, you can even opt to complete one of their multi-session cookery workshops where you can learn everything that you need to know about particular styles of cooking, be it BBQs or Baking.

5. Virgilio's Pizzeria & Portuguese Grill

All four of the best restaurants in Colwyn Bay which have been mentioned so far very much have a traditional British flavour to them serving meals such as roast Sunday dinners and Fish & Chips. Virgilio’s Pizzeria is therefore a bit of a step change.

Owned and operated by a Portuguese family, there is very much an authentic feel here; quite opposed to the ambience that you will find in my chain restaurants. The family serves a range of Italian and Portuguese staples ranging from Pizza and Pasta, to steaks and flame grilled chicken dishes.

There is something for all tastes and budgets, making Virgilio’s a great choice for all of the family. One word of advice before you travel is that you may want to book a taxi to and from the restaurant on account of the excellent wine menu!
